Hunters and the Hunted

"And what if it's not enough?"

She moved back to the bed.

"Do you want me to come with you?"

"I'll make it enough. I'm older than him despite what I look like now. I'm on my seventeenth cycle. Jason's father hasn't even finished his second."

After a moment, Death joined her quietly.

---

Faye hesitated and then shrugged. "Only if you think you have to..."

"He's leader though, isn't there penalty for killing a leader."

She pulled the blanket over the pair of them, snuggling up to him.

"I think I do." He looked at Tuesday and Alarick. "Be back in a few." He disappeared with Faye, ending up outside of hers and Roscos room.

"We're exiled anyway." Jadon sounded gleeful. "And I'm an ancient. A couple more seals break off and I could wipe out his entire clan, collect scalps and bathe in blood like the old days. But one too many seals and Jason starts fading away so..."

Death held her close.

Faye cowered into his side, clearly scared and nervous.

"Please don't let that happen. I need him."

Sirius pushed her towards the door.

She rested her head on his chest.

"I know you do. It takes tremendous energy to break seals that have matured with the body. I couldn't even if I wanted to." Jadon stepped back to give her room.

Faye moved to knock on the door but almost immediately after she tensed and tried to run for it.

Death moved his hand to gently brush through her hair.

"Thank you."

Rosco opened the door. "It's your room, you don't have to knock." He moved to let her in.

"I love you so much Death."

Jadon nodded quietly. "Do...do you want him back? I mean, until his father gets here..."

Faye shuffled on the spot, too ashamed to meet his eye and she just weakly shrugged.

"And I love you Jessica."

"What's he matter?"

"I hope so."

"If you don't mind."

Faye ducked her head and mumbled an apology first, staring at the floor.

"It wouldn't change overnight Jessica."

Jadon exhaled slowly and the shift was almost noticeable with the way his shoulders loosened and his brow straightened. The easiest change to see was his pupils rounding out again.

"I know, I just keep hoping that you don't find me boring."

"Faye, it really would help if I knew what you were apologising for."

"Hey Jay."

"You're different to anything I've experienced. I'm hardly going to find you boring."

"For trying to leave. For waking you up. For not explaining properly...For being me." The last one was added in a whisper.

Jason rubbed the side of his neck gently and winced. "Did he go without a fight?"

"Im in effect, dead I can't change Death, you might find that boring."

"All of that doesn't matter as long as you can honestly tell me that you love me."

"Jadon or your dad?"

"And I am the cause of death itself. If one us cannot change, it is not you my dear, but myself."

"Of course I love you!" Faye sounded a little hurt he'd suggested it, scooting back half a step. "T-That won't change. Not until you want it to."

"Both." Jason tilted his head to the side to allow his neck to make a crunching noise.

"Your dad didn't, Jadon did."

"Then that is all I care about."

"I wouldn't want you to change unless it was absolutely necessary."

Jason rubbed his neck again and nodded.

Faye wrung her hands together clearly still expecting him to get angry or violent to her.

Death moved to kiss her softly on the head.

She smiled slightly.

"So...now that we are standing in the doorway, do you want to come into your room?"
