Meadow Mountain Convicts
Guttural grunts erupted from an old, ram-shackled barn on the outskirts of a mountain range. The summer sun, beaming in through cracked timber, caused the concrete floor to feel like lava beneath William's feet. He wished he still had his shoes, perhaps then he wouldn't have to prance on his toes like the roan stallion he was attempting to break. This place had gone to the dogs since the Richardson boys showed up with that saviour complex. William cussed, cursed and cursed as loud as his dry throat would allow as he a loose nail went through the bottom of his foot. Better him than the horses. He would still be dealing with the ex convict who had stolen his shoes though.
Plot
Mountain Meadow Ranch! Owned by Billy Richardson, an affluent and charming businessman, it's aim and focus was to break in problem horses for a price. It's customers were often just as affluent as Billy himself and with his fierce determination it became world renowned.
But tragedy struck, and Mountain Meadow changed forever, when Billy was sent away with the flashing lights for reasons unknown. Life behind bars didn't treat Billy well, and he was driven to taking his own life.
This left Mountain Meadow in the hands of his eldest son, James. James believed had his father been given the opportunity to get outside, he would have still been with them now. So, he enrolled Mountain Meadow into a prison rehabilitation scheme, where convicts assist the professional trainers and hands in breaking the horses and returning them safely to their owners.
The ranch don't know what these prisoners have done, to prevent bias effecting how they are treated, they simply trust the prisons own health and safety schemes.
Roles on the Ranch
Scheme Participant You are a convict who has been chosen to be a part of this scheme. If you complete it, you have a set amount of time knocked off your sentence. If you are trouble you are sent home. You are assigned one member of staff to be your mentor, your member of staff could have many different participants to oversee or you may have the privilege of one to one. There is an old caravan that you share with one other of the same gender on the property, though all of the caravan accommodations are placed close together.
Mentor You are paid to mentor the participants. You can have up to three to keep an eye on at once, but in some cases you may only have one at a time dependent on the need. You must teach your participants the ropes of the farm, negotiate with the farm hands and trainers on their behalf to ensure they are learning and most importantly behaving. You are the middle man. Trying to keep everyone happy, and making reports and paperwork on the participants progress.
Trainer You are in charge of breaking the horses in. You have the assistance of the Scheme Participants occasionally, but they aren't always good af their jobs. You have the use of the sand school, the walker. If the horse is not broken in by a specified date then you are the one with your head on the chopping block.
Stable Hand You are responsible for the grunt work! Mucking out stalls, turning out the horses, preparing feed and making sure the medicines are placed correctly in the feed, putting the tac on the horses for the trainers. You are a vital role on the ranch, and the worst paid
Vet Your main responsibility is the well being of the horses.
Ground Rules
- No pictures! Let's try and push ourselves on the descriptive. I want to know what these characters or their homes look like based on your words alone.
- If your character is feeling a certain way, have them show it! I don't want 'They felt nervous', I want 'There weight shifted from one foot', 'arms stretched over the head', 'sweat beaded'. It all helps picture the quirks
- If you have more than one character, they don't have to be each others biggest fans. It's boring if characters are cheerleaders of your own characters. Allow your characters to be terrible people. sometimes! And allow other characters to hold them accountable for that.
- I am keeping the character form basic. Leave surprises for us to learn along the way. Knowing everything from the off-set is also boring.
- No supernatural. Characters can speculate about the existence of things, of course, but there is no powers here, no immortality etc.
