"I want to go home now," Lilly whinpered, terrified. "Take me home."

Daniel fell asleep on the sofa.

"I can't baby, but don't worry I'll be here every day and every night."

Alexis eventually fell asleep, but she woke up in the night as her pains got worse.

Daniel remained where he was, fast asleep.

"Please.." She begged.

Alexis tried to get herself to stand, but her legs gave out as a worse wave of pain went through her, and she realised that she was having contractions.

"I can't." He told her.

Daniel slept.

---
"You can, go get me forms to sign. I can discharge myself.."

Alexis shouted for Daniel.

"Not when you can';t work, look Lily the injury was pretty bad, you need to stay so that they can make sure you're fully well."

Lily shook her head with a sob, terrified.

Daniel groaned awake, muttering as he wandered up the stairs; "What?"

He sat next to her on the bed. "Look, it won't be so bad."

"I think we need to go to the hospital." She managed to get herself back onto the edge of the bed.

She turned her head away from him so he would see the tears.

"Why?"

"Because I'm having contractions"

He had her look at him. "Hey, no tears my love."

Daniel sighed, wandering over and lifting her up; bringing her to the car.

She moved her face away from his hand, burying herself against his shoulder.

He held her close.

She let him, in too much pain to argue.

Daniel drove her to the hospital and then brought her inside.

Lilly just trembled against him, mumbling something inaudible against his shoulder.

When they were inside, they were taken straight to the maternity unit where they were shown to a bad and their chosen midwife helped Alexis to prepare as she talked Daniel through things as well.

He kissed her head.

Daniel listened in silence.

"If its been so long and it was that bad then you probably know," Lilly attempted again, easier to understand this time though she was still quiet and her voice shook. "I-I was late an- and a test came up positive. I- I thought it might of been a false positive so I was going to tell you a- and then try again when we got home but- but it doesn't matter anymore."

The midwife checked Alexis over and told her that she still had a way to go, but she wasn't that far away, so we went to get some things for her.

When she was gone, Alexis looked to Daniel. "I'm sorry." She whispered.

"I already know....We can always try again, in the future." He told her.

"That's all I wanted to hear off of you." Daniel whispered. "If I'm in work are you going to tell the whole world that the baby can walk before me? If you think the kid can stay out passed a certain time and I disagree are you going to ignore me and let it happen anyway? We're meant to be a team and you've ignored me, with almost every step of this pregnancy I have had to fight you. You went to scans without me, you ordered a cot online without ne, decided colour schemes. If I'm going to have to figgt you to be involved in my own kids life then we need to split, an- and we need to get a lawyer and work out set rules and shared custody. If this continues, we're finished. My opinon matters more than your damn colleagues."

"I don't want to try, we hadn't tried before thats what made it.. I don't know. I don't know how to explain it and now I'm sad because I am stuck in a stupid hospital and I feel useless and my heart hurts over a baby I didnt even know if we wanted or was ready for which makes no sense because if I - if we didnt know why does it hurt so much?"

"I wanted to surprise you." She told him, I decorated, bought things and put things together as a surprise. " She told him as she winced." I need you." She told him through the contraction." I can't do this without you. "

" Because it was still our baby." He told her. "You know I love kids, I would love to have a baby with you."

"You've just made me feel like you don't think I'll be any good at this. I was meant to put stuff together, I was meant to look after you. It's all I get to do to be involved in any of it at this stage." Daniel mumbled, taking her hand. "You must think I'm going to be useless if your already acting like I'm a deadbeat. I bet all your colleagues think I'm awful to since you've let them help you and told them all the stuff you've been doing alone. I wanted to make the cot, I wanted to help you up stairs when you were hurting and run baths for you. I wanted to be at scans and.." he shook his head. "Doesn't matter."

"I don't want to try for one," Lilly muttered. "I don't even know if I wanted that one but now we dont get to choose and it hurts... And it hurts knowing you found out from a doctor and not from me, you must of hated me. Thought I was keeping it from you."

"I said I was sorry." She told him. "I only wanted to surprise you." She told him, everything was slowly starting to get too much, she was in labour and she felt like they were arguing. "Daniel I love you, I don't thunk your a deadbeat, I don't talk bad about you to anyone, I tell them. How many times you've made me dinner or run. My baths after a shift or just sat up with me at night and gave me a massage." She told him, trying to get it all out through contractions

Daniel was silent.

"Not now, you must of at first though."

He shook his head. "I knew you would have had a reason or might not have known."

The midwife came. Back when Daniel. Went silent. "Are you two alright?" She asked.

"Fine."

"I'm still sorry," Lilly whispered.

The midwife nodded. "Alright." A few hours had passed and Alexis soon gave birth to a little boy, as the nurses carried him away, he gave a loud cry, Alexis smiled in relief at hearing her son cry but she was too tired to react properly.

Daniel shifted his weight uncomfortably when the baby was carried away, "I thought we got to hold them before they tool them away."
