"Maybe he'll find out it cures cancer and recreate it and sell it to every country in the world to make a helluva lot of money... Hey that's something, why aren't you a doctor if you can heal?"

"And advertise my ability? A majority of our kind are trying to keep their powers hidden. If a miracle doctor suddenly appears there will be questionings and then interviews and the others will be hunted out. It's a contract of silence. Even if they want to show themselves, they stay quiet for those who would be hidden. If they found children who had abilities like Raine, or like Abel, Noah, at a young age, they would probably train them to fight. I'm not going to have that weight on my shoulders. I heal those who deserve it but, in a public place I couldn't. I made that mistake years ago. It's what started off the witch burnings."

"Youre straying into that category of 'I don't want to know,' again. You could've just said you didn't want to risk exposure."

"I suppose I could have." Jace shrugged. "I just like having a valid reason. You don't seem to like talking with me as much as Raine."

"M'not in love with you, she is, of course she wants to talk to you all the time."

"Even so, before we entered a relationship we still managed to have civil conversations. If you're uncomfortable talking with me because I have a slightly dysfunctional brain to mouth filter, we don't have to have this conversation. I can stay quiet."

"You haven't slipped up that much, we can always talk about something different."

"What would you want to talk of instead?" Jace pondered for a moment and then asked, "Do you have an ability?"

"Telekinesis. Strong but not very controlled. I could move a car if I wanted to, but I lack concentration and control."

"Is it something you're working on or do you just let it happen as it will?"

"I'm working on it, but the older I get the harder its gets. Learning to control powers is like learning a language, the younger you are the easier it is to do. I only started trying when I got to around sixteen, that's when my lack of control started getting dangerous, I'd lose my temper at a teacher and desks would go flying across the classroom. I turn twenty three in a couple of weeks and I have the control of a five year old..."

"During a situation in which frightening you won't end too badly for me, I'll try and help you if it's what you want. I lost all feeling when I turned...was it eight or nine? My mother stabbed me and it healed as soon as the knife left the wound." Jace frowned, brow furrowing. "And I haven't had control of my power since. It really annoys Raine because I can't tell the extent of how much I'm hurt when the numbness stays but the healing doesn't. I can drop people like flies as well, if I'm not careful. I'll still help you if you want me to."

"Youre really trusting…" Maria said thoughtfully after a few moments. "Following me here, just assuming I'm telling the truth and I have good intentions. For all you know i could be leading you into a trap, getting you here for my father…"

"If that were the case, I would have little trouble escaping and Sampson would no doubt raze the building to the ground with everybody inside." Jace added the last part as an afterthought, shrugging a shoulder. "You seem genuinely concerned for Raine, however, so I'm inclined to believe you. My own worry dictates my actions, also. I'm not going to willingly leave my Chosen in distress."

"I'm not, I wouldn't be that harsh, but I find it surprising just how trusting you are..."

"I would have been paranoid as all hell were it any other situation but it's Raine." Jace shrugged. "I care where it matters. And if you do actually manage to get me to her, I will get you whatever the hell you want."

"It's sweet how much you care for her." Maria smiled. "She's a lucky girl."

"I love her. I couldn't imagine life without her." Jace hummed softly. "Abel told me it was scary how far I would go for her. I just don't want her hurt but I don't want to stifle her either. Just trying to be considerate really."

"Just be careful yeah? She's fragile, she can break, unlike you."

"I'm not going to let her." Jace smiled amiably. "And if I cause the damage, well...I already know how to get rid of myself, no matter how impermanent the method."

"Just keep her safe is all I ask, and happy."

"I'll do everything I can to keep her safe and happy," Jace promised. "I can submit that in writing or any other form you want, if verbal isn't enough. If the wound wouldn't heal immediately, I'd even swear in blood. I know a little binding magic."

"The fact you'd be willing to do that is more than enough." Maria nodded.

Jace nodded quietly himself. "You aren't going to pose a danger towards her, are you? And I hope you realise, should the opportunity present itself, I might take her with me, if it's what she wants."

"If that what she wants then I'll let her go."
