"I've a-actually had enough, thanks," Citlali quietly mumbled, moving to stand. "Gonna take everything back through."

Chiquita shuffled over so she could gently lean against him, slinging an arm hesitantly and loosely over his waist in case he opted to move. Her temperature had rocketed up a good ten degrees, so she was now at about seventy.

Citlali nodded and walked towards the kitchen, holding everything carefully.

"Sorry if I'm too warm." Chiquita buried her face against his shoulder and neck with a pleased sigh. "But you're nice and cool." She moved to sling a leg over his, so she was half lying on him by now.

"Can you even feel anything, or do you just choose to ignore it?" Chiquita wriggled her arm under his shirt to get skin contact.

Citlali scraped the remains into the bin before putting the bowl in the sink to be washed up, briefly staggering against the kitchen counter.

"Yeah, just feeling a little dizzy lately. I'm fine." Citlali smiled at him.

"Is it a choice to turn it on or off or you just stuck with it, like that Ephraim?" Chiquita absently pressed a kiss under his jaw. Her breathing was a little heavier as she got to the point where she had difficulty.

"Its a choice, I just turn off the pain receptors so heat doesn't bother me."

Citlali nodded. "If you aren't convinced, we can have Barrett look over me, right? I'm sure I'm fine."

"I-I'm glad." Chiquita managed to mumble. "T-That I don't h-hurt you." She'd gone limp against him, her breathing reduced to short gasps and soft hitches of pain.

"T-Think I'm g-gonna go now..." Chiquita whispered, voice barely audible. "S'hard t-to stay..." She gave a watery cough and dribbled blood onto him with a shaky apology.

Citlali nodded. "Should we check his room then?"

Chiquita gave another watery cough and after a few moments, stopped breathing, her grip on him going completely loose.

"Is Ephraim okay with him now? Steel can be quite nasty to people he's not sure of." Citlali ducked out of the kitchen and walked towards the lounge to look for Barrett.

Chiquita shuddered awake again with a pained gasp about half an hour later, tightly squeezing the covers of the bed.

"Gone for long this time?" Chiquita rolled away from him to fold her arms over her face.

"That's Ephraim though." Citlali leaned around the doorway into the lounge, startling Barrett who twisted fully to face her as soon as he caught movement from the corner of his eye.

Barrett hesitated before gently taking her wrist.

"I'm asking you. I don't want to force you into anything."

Chiquita stood slowly. "Want to think of what we can do while I clean up?"

Barrett pulled his hand away after a few moments, angled away from Alex so the notebook he held up to Citlali after scribbling on it, only Citlali could see it, whose brow furrowed in confusion.

"What's...what's this??" Citlali asked, taking the notebook and showing the word to Alex. "Barrett thinks I have it."

Barrett had checked her health and found out the reason why she was tired and dizzy, and why she bruised easily was because she had leukaemia, cancer of the white blood cells.

Barrett's expression was slightly grim and closed off.

Chiquita walked over to her wardrobe, stretching slowly and contently before moving to pick some clothes out.
