He sighed. “Be honest mother did Alessia and I come across as a happy couple?”

"You seemed fine with it, yes."

(( I just think he is being super duper harsh ))

“Then I’m a better actor than I thought.” He told her.

"Your choice is marry the woman to stop war or step down as King then."

“Yeah I know.”

"Good."

(( Should we make new people for them then? ))

Damian looked to her and then to the door.

(( It's been like a year and he isn't budging He is being harsh, she probs wouldn't go back at this point ))

((i feel like there is a deeper issue here, something stopping him, maybe he just wants her to be happy and he doesn't believe that he could make her happy))

(( I just think his chance is going to disappear soon though. He needs to get in there now and help her rebuild herself because if she learns to rebuild herself alone that'll be that ))

((We could skip until the ball, it could help them be romantic with each other and share a moment together))

A few days later everyone was spending time at the ball, Damian had even invited Alessia and right now he was stood to the shadows watching everyone. Many women tried to talk to him and get him to notice them but he didn’t or if he did it wasn’t for long.

"You look miserable," Alessia mused as she stepped up beside him, two drinks in her hands - one which she pushed into his palm so he'd take it. "You have that zoning on look on your face. The I need bourbon look."

“Still sober so that’s probably a bad thing.” He told her as he took the drink. “Nah I’m bored, I’ve always hated these things.”

"You enjoyed that one the other year, the one before the attack. All I heard all night was you laughing."

He shrugged. “Yeah everyone was having some fun that year.” He looked out over the guests. “How about you? You looked like you were definitely enjoying it last year.”

"I'd rather not talk about last year." She answered, swallowing. Instinctively hooking her arm through his, leaning against him ever so slightly as she followed his gaze. "How have you been? Rose told me you've been having lots of meetings, talking to Princess'?"

“Yeah, I’m a bachelor who is also king, apparently I need a queen to help me rule.” He told her. “And to make alliances.” It sounded like a robotic response coming from him like he had been telling himself the same sentence for a while. “You have no idea how much I want everything to be simple again.”

"It can be, for a few minutes at least." She nodded towards one of the side rooms. "You can still hear the music in there. Would you like to dance? No one will see us, we won't upset any future brides in the process I promise."

He glanced to where she suggested and he smiled softly. “That sounds like fun.” He told her. “Go ahead and I’ll join you in a few minutes.”

Alessia squeezed his arm gently before peeling herself away, moving through the crowd and heading into the room.

After a few minutes of her waiting he would have entered through the same door, shutting it behind him and as he entered music started to play. Her favourite song to dance to.
