“He didn’t even - he didn’t even ask me how we were…” Daphne murmured, arms wrapping around herself. “Or showed any concern I - what exactly did you say about his son that has turned him so cold?”
“We pointed out that he was a bastard and his presence as offensive to you. As it is. You never mentioned that there was a stillborn, also.” Iskra pointed out quietly.
“Would that have changed how you viewed him? To learn that he was one of a pair? That his other son was born completely composed of bark? That he almost killed the mother? That the healers have told her the damage was so severe she will likely never conceive again?”
“I suppose that means at least there will be no more bas - “
“Iskra!” Daphne snapped. “This attitude got you here in the first place!”
“I didn’t harm those girls Kael. She pulled a knife on me.” Wyatt held him back with one arm for a brief moment.

"They are bruised, but it would come as no surprise to me if they left their rooms and gotten into fights at taverns so they had ammunition." Kael swallowed, keeping his hand a tight grip on his shoulder. "They said they hurt you. Is - Are you okay? Have you been seen to?"
"Whether there were meant to be two or not it makes literal difference to what that boy is, and that him still being paraded around here is offensive. You should have seen him flaunting in with his mistress and the boy, with them all night as opposed to mingling with others. It was embarrassing to you.'

“Aoife patched me up… I never checked them for weapons, Agatha had a blade and put it through my hand.” Wyatt lifted his bandaged hand up to show him. “I - I failed Kael. I never checked when I shouldn’t have assumed. That could’ve been for you.”

"Mm, like one of those weeds that you have to spend hours prying from your dresses just for it to end up on there again two minutes later." Aodhän attempted light-heartedness, carrying her back toward the bed.

“Florence is in our rooms sobbing because she doesn’t trust your mother not to put me to death for hurting the girls.” Wyatt replied quietly. “Physically I am sure I will recover… as long as my head remains on my shoulders.”

What you saw last night will have been Kael playing with his son and Indira shadowing the boy…” Daphne shook her head. “He wouldn’t parade her around. I think your anger at him for Idris living here has clouded how you took his actions last night. I believe you were harmed, but I think if you soften your attitudes towards the boy it’ll prevent anything further from happening…”

If he’s never done it before it was likely done to make a point to us because he knew we were there which is even worse, taunting us! Face it Daphne. He came in here and did not ask if you were okay; if the child was okay. You said a bad word about his friend and off he ran. No care for you last night getting drunk and acting the fool with his mistress, no care for you this morning when you are holding your beaten sisters. You have been lovestruck like a fool and this needs to be your eye opener!”

"Prevent anything further happening, you sound like our parents once did. It is our fault if men hurt us, for being improper. But we were the proper ones, it was them that were in the wrong. It is you who they have blinded. This is all.. this all astounds me."

"Good, if you had then I think we may of had to reassess the depth of our frien-" Kael began, almost stumbling to the side when moments after he opened the door to Wyatt's quarters Florence shoved her way passed him. Her arms wrapped around Wyatt's neck, face buried against his chest before he had even stepped inside.
"Nothing was ever going to happen to him, not be our hands, Florence." Kael assured sympathetically. "I'm sorry you all had a fright."
"This is our home, not there. This baby needs to survive. However if it doesn't, we aren't on the streets."
Agatha swallowed, gaze low as she got to her feet.
"There aren't many more things to organise now. Kael is almost finished with organising his council, the rituals are coming to their close."

“Survive and be a son, Daphne insists. As if there is anything to change that from the moment the child is dreamed up by the ancestors. She told me of all the things her mother tried for the boy. Foods and herbs consumed, rituals performed, only certain clothing worn, soaking her feet in oils and the like, all folly. Kael will have our heads if the child does not survive, Daphne if the child is not a son. We have the odds stacked against us.” Lily grimaced.
“Your husband is a brute. Likely acting until the crown gets on his head until he exposed his true self - we have only helped it come out further. What if he turns out like father? If ordering his men to beat us is the first step? What if the next step is you being beaten when you are alone in your chambers?”
“Kael would - “
“Never? You would not be the first. You won’t be the last. All your ladies are from here, all your servants. Not one person to speak out for you. He has isolated you behind a wall of his people and he feels threatened because you finally have us here to see him for what he is. We shall go back to our rooms as you command sister, but we won’t be silent in his mistreatment of you.”

Florence let out a breath, voice too thick for words to escape her lips. Moving one hand up to tangle her fingers in his hair.

“Hi!” Zenovia greeted Kael as she passed him, leaving the room to quickly follow after her sisters. Having not met Kael, so unaware of who he was. Giving him a grin before running past him and out the door.
Daphne had gotten up to pace, taking deep strides as she crossed the room.
“Peace… quiet. Perhaps I’ll let Eira have a dog for a pet instead of just the hunting hounds as she insists.” Isolde chuckled at the thought.
